Bangladesh Hospital Project

The ongoing hospital project in Bangladesh is about community and health engagement in western areas of Bangladesh. It focuses on a number of key areas, including hospitals, clinics, nursing schools, as well as holistic health and social development programmes. The Church of Bangladesh plays a role in all of these. Here are just a few examples of where our support will go:

• The Christian Mission Hospital at Rajshahi, which treats over 1,100 in-patients and 6,000 outpatients annually, and the associated Nursing Institute which trains around 40 students a year.

• A Primary Health Care programme that reaches over 12,000 people annually, and includes health education, HIV/AIDS counselling, plus vaccinations and health checks for children, as well as new equipment such as a digital x-ray machine.

• Social development initiatives such as education on healthcare, diet and women’s rights, plus practical support for expectant and new mothers, children, disabled people and the elderly.

Sister Gillian Rose, head of the USPG supported Bollobhpur Hospital featured in the picture on page 3, says “We are grateful to God for the privilege of training our girls. It is wonderful to watch them develop into reliable and competent nurses and midwives. All find work easily and are appreciated.”

The Anglican Church in Bangladesh is twinned with the Diocese of Llandaff, and so there is a good link between us and the Christian Community there. One of the Bangladesh Christians was at the enthronement of the Bishop of Llandaff last year.

There is a Bangladeshi community in Port Talbot. Many of us live in areas where our neighbours’ families were originally from Bangladesh.
